A refutation of Time
8mn16   color   mono   1999   USA
by Dan Boord & Greg Durbin & Luis Valdovino

"Using the device of an extraordinary lengthy piece of anonymous e-mail received by the narrator, the tape describes the kind of collapse of time and space and serendipitous chains of meaning that can occur using search vehicles on the internet. Juxtaposing various personalities including Will Rogers and Jorge Luis Borges; different geographical locations such as stops along Route 66, coincidence becomesmetaphor takes on the ring of truth." Chaos cathodique
5mn35   color   sil   2001   France
by Laurie Freychet

In this film the visual possibilities offered by the pulsarisation are exploited to a greater extent(but not exhaustively) than in "Pulsar", bringing to the forefront this time the experimental approach of the work. Certain shots therefore voluntarily put the author in a direct relation to his work by setting abyss.

Composition lumière/obscurité
1mn20   color & b/w   stereo   2000   France
by Gérome Godet

The fixed shot of a street (old town) gets bombarded with light and sounds repetitive, gets transformed into worrying place, from which a character, seems to try to escape, in vain. In the second half a more playful sound track renews the film, the strange escape of the character appears to us now as a game showing my own jubilation of manipulating sound and images.

Dieu est en réparation
15mn   color   mono   2001   France
by Sylvain Frebourg

"Dieu est en réparation"... is my first realization video. It acts upon an agressive confrontation between image and sound. The image haunted by the reflection; this parasite is the visual equivalent of feedback from sound. Their presence in the heart of the film represents the limit; it's when the image and the sound contain that which justifies their existence. This film is therefore the research of theobscurity behind each image and the silence behind each sound. This justifies the film beginning and ending in a cemetery.

Hypothalamus Saturation
2mn16   color   stereo   1999   Australia

... there are many layers, SELECTION, MUTATION, and REPRODUCTION are the primary techniques that contribute to the process of evolution in this film... the hypothalamus has seven chief homeostatic roles, it is the role of the nuclei involved in biological rhythms and drives, such as the sex drive which are most pertinent here.

La vie mode d'emploi
12mn45   color   mono   2000   France
by Edwige Mandrou

We experienced a intercept functioning like joining, disruption, hypnosis, generators of ideas. The synchronous character of the image and the sound at high speed is essential with the osmosis of hearing and the vision, with the bringing together of time and space. We use a camera amateur, and a technique "round-rise" simple. The video image is treated musicalement (sequences, loops, cuts).

Mamilo
3mn23   b/w   sil   2000   Brazil
by Tatiana Martins de Mello

The video "Mamilo" (bosom) was produced in a very simple and spontaneous fashion. The support is the artist's own body (a theme approached by certain contemporary artists, using electronic means and even information technology). This video is without a doubt the negation of the visual violence produced by the big hollywoodiennes manufacturers of emotions and this appears through the transformations, from the antagonistic states to states of strong sensations.

Surface Colour
9mn   color   stereo   2000   New Zealand

"Surface Colour" is situated in a conscious space. The landscape, or horizontal, is a form representative of our environment. The lanscape is seen as a concrete homogeneous progressions, with which the events beneath consciousness, the heterogeneous or vertical forms, emerge and intersect, producing simultaneity and the notion of perpetuation of experience.

.wave
3mn   color   mono   2001   France
by Cédric Van Eenoo

It's about a loop. the image is that of a wave which passes back and forth before the spectators eye. A rhythm is created by the sound and the incessant coming and going of the sea. Through and by the sound, it is possible to confuse this editing with the real rhythm which a wave can create. This sequence represents a perfect loop because the return is identical in every way to the departure point. This image is fished from nature, but the editing makes a hypnotic, turned away version.

An elegy to our small selves
10mn   color   stereo   2002   USA
by Anita Chang

Calmly but desperately I attempt to link the disappearing animal and human worlds. Interfacing the -disappearing- technologies of Super -8mm and 16mm image projection, with the raw technology of immediacy and reality that is video. Captive images of animals and humans in raw form are juxtaposed and documented in a way that speaks more tothe current identity crises of the human race and ultimately, the fragility of beauty, nature and humanity.

Contemporaries
4mn30   b/w   stereo   2001   Belgium
by Karen Vanderborght

This clip is made for and inspired by the music of the Lofi Finnish group Kiila. As does the song, the images provoke a naive message "The people who live around you, are your contemporaries". The beginning shows the situation of the spectators (at the cinema, in front of the television, in everyday life)who are watching the actions of people of diverse appearance, before the absent camera. Everything finishes with a childish game between image and music. This video is part of a compilation of clips entitled “Killa-Heartcore-video”, which will be released in the summer of 2002.

Déjà Loin
4mn58   color   stereo   2001   France
by François Paris

François Paris's images, on the face of it, seem to be a simple succession of images borrowed from an everyday world… We are suddenly plunged into personal feelings : a poetry of colours, a contrast of day and night, absence and presence. Each one of her images is a reminiscence, a known sensation, a journey where we are aware of the initial departure point, but not the destination or arrival. Could it be that the work is to create an opening to elsewhere ? The images of the real, transformed, are they not a trampoline which transports us from the finite to infinite ?

[ekimoz]
5mn20   color   stereo   2001   France
by Damien Larrain & Sylvain Lemaire

"[ekimoz]" is first of all born from pure graphic and visual will. It appears as a succession and overlapping of paintings which absorb each other in a contemplative whirlwind of colours, asperity and materials. Its graphic texture participates in the mineral, vegetable and animal universe(...) This musical entity, linked to the phonetic symbol of the title, tenses towards a fissure, an asperity of being. Also the flesh itself of the images is contaminated, it wipes out, sucked by the colour of the sonic flux which pulls along and dies with it, drowned by the bluish rain of an "[ekimoz]".

Flux
18mn   b/w   sil   2000   Portugal
by Frédéric Dupuy

The editing is a looping of running water on a train window. a sequence of extreme luminosity which drives me to keep silence as the indispensable element for penetrating this glow. The landscape arrives in the instant where it is no longer possible for me to frame the flux...the downpour is finished. The elements on that border the track mange to contaminate the screen creating another flux.

Hintergrund
4mn05   color   stereo   2000   France
by Éric Bernaud

The video project "Hintergrund" is born of a double game, musical and visual, by applying the principals of sound and image remix. Mogway remixes the title "Formant" by Pluramon. The original elements of the video Formant by the director Dr Heike Sperling are re-used, re-filmed, triturer destroyed and added to other images. The pixel once narrative becomes abstraction, the residual substance is the rhythm for a coding of image. What is original about it.

Images
3mn50   b/w   mono   2001   France
by Pierre-Yves Cruaud

Two points of view of the same series of shots, are presented through two different frames. Sculptures come to life, while humane face tries to fit in between them. The research of a true point of view interrogates the images of this video. A vibratory movement, with different rhythms, crosses the two screens and provokes a sparkling of the images. By exploring different levels of visibility, an interrogation about the persistence of vision is constructed. Are we nearer to the images or to their deletion.

I had been listening to glitch music, and I liked the way that every particle of the sound had attention paid to it, had sigifiance - I wanted to try to do the same thing in the video track. When using the camera, I was drawn to luminosity - to me light has qualities very similar to pitch and tonality of sound and I wanted to make a piece which depicted this correlation... I manipulate the material that has more to do with the final work than the source of the sonic or visual material.

I wanted to film the forest as if it was the only possible world, a world which would be less of a reinvention than a withdrawal, to assist in its tumbling and capture the nudity. Each branch, each drop and each refection becomes therefore the receptacle of a living earth where the membranes swollen with light pulsate a sort of pantheist celebration. One had to therefore become child, become animal, to scatter for the most brutal reality bears properly phantasmagoric visions, then finally attain what is real via the biggest aesthetic violence. Not through a story but an itinerary, a palpable adventure, an experience.

La vidéo - poésie
3mn55   color & b/w   stereo   2001   France
by Émilie Anthouard

For the realisation of this video, my method was to first of all choose a poem : "Discours pour les grandes jours d'un jeune homme appelé Picasso" d'Aragon. The final objective was to find a structure, codes proper to the video which would permit the establishment of a new form of poetry. The interest shown in artists writing has influenced this choice. My aim is not to propose an illustration of Aragons' poetic text, even less to plate him with images. But, by video, I try to reproduce with the spectator the effects, the emotions which a poetic text produces in its reader. I therefore transcribed this poem into images without going via illustration which heads back to the idea of copy.

Le Patient
11mn10   color   stereo   2002   France
by Clément Zerbola (Hellaimorth)

The video "Le Patient" is a personal statement which came to exorcise the mortal illness from which suffered my father-in-law. I made it for my personal practice in the second semester of my license year in Visual Arts. This short film criticises the helplessness of medicine and translates plastically the obsession, the hope of short term life. Briefly, the tentative to flee and little by little the closing in of the sick person unto himself. A prisoner of his pain, the patient is going to fatally suffer a return to the anticipated void. Minimalist video of which the efficiency was probing up to here, "Le Patient" is above all a visceral production to be watched alone in the dark and with a high sonic volume. In ideal circumstances, media should become physical...trying.

The title "M3" is the name of the music by Maurizio used in the film. My aim was to visually represent the rhythmic structure of the piece by isolating each of the sounds. The work proposes four different ways of regrouping these sounds so that they can be easily perceived on the screen. For example : First system : Rectangles running from left to right, their size, their duration and their place of appearance are defined by their rhythmic structure in the heart of the piece. The "clap" is worth two beats (whole note) it's size is therefore twice the "boom" and is situated just above it, and as follows for the rest of the sounds.

Sampleur et sans reproche
11mn30   color & b/w   stereo   2003   France
by Thierry Polo-Pardise

"sampleur et sans reproche" is the title of this short film video, and it is, or almost is the title of piece by OPAK ("sans peur et sans reproche") used in the sound track. The work presented here is a precise re-editing of "virages", a one hour film projected during the OPAK concert in Beaubourg the 13/12/02 in the framework of the exhibition Sonic-Process. My working of visual forms is tightly linked to sonic form workings of the OPAK musicians...Never the less, it is not a question of a video mix, neither that of a simple image/music synchronisation. It is a relation so shot/duration, internal/external rhythmics, of editing and consequently of cinematographic language. I therefore searched for an interaction between visual and sonic landscapes that mutually enriched each other, in order to produce a new sense, a new sensation, unedited, erupting from their confrontation rather than a simple ..... sound/image.
