by Ellen Zweig
In the parks in China, people practice Tai Chi, English and Chinese. Each in his language space is trying to see into the other space. Someone is embroidering the Chinese word "wen", which means language or culture. Machines make marks that look like language. A poet and a sinologist talk about Ernest Fenollosa, whose essay, "The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry" has been an inspiration to poets and an embarrassment to sinologists.

...as they pass...
6mn color stereo 2006 Austria
by Brigitta Bödenauer
This film is about the concept of memory. Images from the kahlenberg-hotel/vienna are compiled, deconstructed and de-contextualized. Narrative logic of space and time is ignored. A subjective, emotive interpretation causes the evolution from collection to process to product. The intersection of these categories shows the disassociation between lived and narrated experience, being and representing, which is at the heart of our mediated society.

1/3 (one other three)
7mn color stereo 2006 USA
by Chiaki Watanabe
"1/3" consists of one visual source and two sound sources ranging from custom-made electronics to electronic violin effects. It examines ‘sound as image, image as sound’ with visual trigged sound and sound triggered image created through simple basic elements. The intention of this unit is to deconstruct the computer term, “one-bit” with core communication elements, sound and image and then reconstruct it as an art form. "1/3" explores the essence of simplicity as the art of complexity with human-machine interactions. 1/3 uses the expression, "one-bit" as a point of reference along with low-tech materials with high-tech programming to investigate the essence of simplicity and new application of visual music. "1/3" takes live audiovisual media to new limits of depth, dimensions and scale with “one-bit” expression.

A year
26mn color stereo 2006 USA
by Mark Street
A tattered diary film. Middle age concerns swirl around me in Brooklyn and follow to North Carolina, and New Orleans (before the storm) and back home again. Video journal entries mix with 35mm abstract film images, sublime and inviting, suggesting and elegy for celluloid. As friends drift away I retreat into myself. Solipsism beckons, and I stave it off, barely. I contemplate my body falling apart, my kids growing up, changes and disappearances.

An unstoppable heart beating and the flapping wings of a hummingbird, lead to the thrills of passion that can drive us all towards pleasure, knowledge or peril. Immemorial voyages to the unknown are evocated. Departing and arriving. Conflict and territoriality. Unbalanced relationship between mankind and the surrounding nature is established. Destruction, constant rebuilding and faith are roots to the suspenseful tensions binding areas in transition. The ecotone.

6mn color stereo 2007 Germany
by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne
The experimental film tells the story of a homeless person, who lost its identity in all the traumatic experiences it was undergoing. Again, the artist uses the form of the allegorical representation for pointing to essential questions of human existence. All people are homeless in on or the other way, most however, suffer from it without being aware of it.

Deflection
11mn color dolby stereo 2005 Germany
by Erika Matsunami & Antonis Anissegos
"Deflection" consists of variations through optical and acoustic static movements. Footage of natural events exhibiting chaotic behaviour serves as the raw material. Through different temporal manipulations, these visual and acoustic movements become dynamic systems. The original phenomena lose their cognitive value, cause illusions, and arouse associations with elements that have similar patterns of movement. Image and sound are united and link various contents that infinitely superimpose and supplement one another while freely evolving. Everything is interconnected, interrelated, interdependant: every part of the entity is an entity in itself.

Display
12mn35 color stereo 2007 Portugal
by Jonathan Franco
A disorganized presentation of photographs and picture frames are the prelude to a confrontation of several layers of interpretations: historical, political, social and sentimental. Homage to immigration and anonymous stories of success, a brief reflection on the effects of colonization illustrated by postal stamps and the transmition of culture thru a ceremonial tribal preparation of a meal, all collide and create a simple intimate display of the fragile beauty of humanity.

4mn50 color stereo 2005 Germany

In 1998, Agricola de Cologne became a victim of a terror attack. The video is the attempt to make the traumatic experiences perceivable via metaphoric images on an emotional level. Eclipse. Remanence 2
5mn58 color stereo 2005 France
by Jessica Dalibon
The body needs light, color, movement to be revealed. It becomes luminous intensity and screen in the dreamlike and unconscious projections. Light and color, by attacking (affecting) the body, the landscape, the image as surface, snatch the glance, seize it. They allow to reach another level of the image : its thickness. Torn, damaged, shared between what is and what was, images re-appear, real or fantasized, made by rhythmic and semantic faults. The temporality is flexible : stop on image, slow motion, acceleration, the time is dilated, interrupted, contracted. Frozen, image and body have the possibility of being at the same time as we, to belong to the same temporality.

Free Field
34mn37 color stereo 2006 Israel
by Liora Belford
Abstractly, a free field is a field which has a unique solution to any given initial data. Mathematically, it is described by linear partial differential equations - an approximated solution. Acoustically, an anechoic space simulates a free field - a representation of a theoretical infinite space in which there is no sound waves reflections. Visually, the free field consists of theoretical infinite pixels space where a 3D panorama is transformed into 2D plot to form a geometrically distorted pixel space.

Fugue
18mn30 color stereo 2007 Russia
by Galina Myznikova & Sergey Provorov
The young people who have come to the early music concert instead of taking pleasure from instrument fine sounding, have to struggle with a wind forced by the organ into the music hall. The air streams subjected to musical impulses, run into a listener in spite of his will. Voices are not audible, but they sometimes break through noise of the wind and music. Force of an air influence gives compound psychophysical experiences. Something tries to establish a certain transcendental dialogue which sets in for a moment, but then disappears … At one time the wind accompanied by low monotonous organ noise, brings motionless sitting people to certain unconsciousness, to mad activity: fight is started at the concert.

"Happy Again" is a digital age motion study inspired by the chronophotographic work of Etienne-Jules Marey. The signature scene from the Hollywood musical Singin’in the Rain is split into seven layers. Each layer is moving at a different speed and is visible equally in superimposition. At the temporally central point all visual and audio elements coalesce in a single frame. The result uncovers a new cinema, music and dance that are buried within the familiar iconic sequence.

Psycho(s)
12mn color & b/w stereo 2005 China
by Yuk-Yiu IP & ST
"Psycho(s)" is a live remix of Alfred Hitchcok’s Psycho and Gus Van Sant’s remake in 1998. Running on custom software that edits the films in real-time, "Psycho(s)" juxtaposes and condenses the two films that were made almost 40 years apart into a hypnotic stream of mirror images. The images and sounds, drifting in and out of sync, create a perpetual state of cinematic déjà vu that haunts and confuses both the original and its double. "Psycho(s)" recycles the original narratives, forming new poetic associations in an endless cycle of parallel edits.

r.b.w.
9mn color stereo 2006 USA
by Chiaki Watanabe
“r.b.w. is a live audiovisual set associated with colors, shapes and forms. The set consists of 3 abstract live visuals that associate with three primary color states; red, blue and white. Based on chromotherapy studies, specific colors bring balance to our physical and emotional systems. Each selected set of three colors(as samples) brings different stimulations and effects. The intention is to investigate how color in motion can alter mood or emotional states similar to music; what certain music has the power to do. Image and sound when pursued with this approach should enhance combination beyond and besides status quo. This is the potential of what can be experienced when image and sound are combined in a live media experiment with psychophysical approach. "r.b.w vol.1" was presented with live EEG (Electroencephalograph) generated sound.

Secrètement au bord du monde
2mn50 color stereo 2007 France

Juxtaposing my felt literary, aesthetic, I compose my video starting from my photographs like a dialogue making the echo with various narrative approaches, where poetry takes precedence over anything else, having for vocation to detect a signifiant and “extraordinary” fitting of the world. A writing of “wavering” through the details of the life, all is pretext with the metaphor and the poetry of the things.

The beautiful garden

The garden that is a mere scenario to five old black and white anonymous photographs, attempts to capture a moment between a father and his three children, assumes now the core of all attentions, becoming dominant in splendour and life. The human issue reveals to be secondary and almost a background. The journey thru nature ends with footage of a garden I believe to be the same one where the pictures were taken decades ago.

"U.I.P." is a series of collaborative live audiovisual performance. The pieces are cross-talk between sound modulated abstract graphic animation of geometry patterns with minimalist aesthetics and electro acoustic sound which settled upon a solid commonalty in relationship to the processes and “elemental” materials. Both chiaki and fellow musicians are committed to work from concentrated curtailed pallets of basic material elements at the input stage to make the clearest common vocabulary available for extended fluid real-time conversations in abstract audio and visual expression. Presented at Location One (NY) and the European Media Art Festival (Osnabrück, Germany).

The artist attempts to translate perceived energy (of the city) into energized perception by means of a stream of images in which the spectator has no alternative but to immerse himself completely as into a wave. The generally accepted representation of a city as a homogeneous, clearly structured unified whole gives way to a dynamic, fragmentary and individual perception of the urban environment.

We want angel
7mn30 color stereo 2007 China
by Yuk-Yiu IP & ST
"We want angel" restages the final showdown of Sam Peckinpah’s Western classic the Wild Bunch (1969) as a modern tale of Sisyphus. Running as a real-time loop with custom software, Peckinpah’s heroic bloodbath becomes a psychedelic trip of non-stop shootouts, an eternal orgy of fetishistic self-destruction that borders between the sublime and the mundane. The never-ending cycles of shootings-killings mirror and unwind the obsessive-compulsive disorder of (male) destructive heroism/eroticism that haunts the history of narrative cinema.

October 32, 1988 was a good day to see light, shadow, color, movement, people, buildings, smoke, air, trains, and everything else. I’m glad I witnessed it all with my camcorder at the ready. And I’m happy I rediscovered these images 18 years after I captured them and finally had the time to edit them. This is a brief video poem to be enjoyed on a bright sunny day.
