Images Contre Nature 2005 :::: 69 films
#01
4mn25   color   stereo   2003   France
by David-Olivier Ribault

The cinematographic phenomenon can be envisaged like a screen where the luminous sequences follow on carried by a sound linking and unlinking to the movements of the images. "#01" is a tentative of radical and clinical paring of the cinematographic phenomenon, a drama where lights and sounds remind us of life.

a surplus of landscape
8mn52   color   stereo   2004   USA
by Ellen Zweig

A collage of landscape; an interview with filmaker, Leslie Thorton, while she is hooked up to a lie detector; a dance in a red dress. Landscapes in places as various as China, France, California. There aree so many images of landscape. Why would anyone travel when we can travel in our imaginations? Digital video cut with Super-8 and 16mm film.

Alone, Apart: The Dream Reveals the Waking Day
7mn   color & b/w   stereo   2004   USA
by Mark Street

An hommage to the two ramshackle cities, made up of footage shot while wandering. I meander city streets with a camera, looking to be haunted by unfamiliar vistas. I find solace in the forgotten landscapes, odd voices on a ham radio, shimmering water in a desolate harbor. Later I attack the film, moving it this way and that, trying to squeeze it against its will, wrest strangeness from the everyday.

c'est la nuit qui commence
7mn   color   stereo   2004   France
by Pierre Villemin & Jean Villemin

Memory. Whoever wishes it. We drag it around. Along with the rest. A cart, a tilting cart of miseries. Ashes. Clippings. Bodies. Older ones. Shadows of themselves. They are all there. We are dead so they say. Come. "C'est la nuit qui commence" talks, sings and watches. It is still a question of memory and the torments it provokes. Lacan said something like "the idea of death makes life bearable" and memory doesn't help things. And what if the past made life unbearable for us...

Carnet de route. décembre 2003 - août 2004
9mn18   color   stereo   2004   Belgium
by Gaël Bentein

In December Joseph and I moved into our new house. In a dynamic editing reminiscent of the Bolshevik school, this fragment of my filmed diary, through the furtive moments of our lives such as work, discovery of our new landscape, friends marriages, holidays,...evoke, by the interpenetration of different mediums (photos, video and S8) a time which flows ineluctably, bringing changes of which the signs are visible everywhere.

Circumvisions
30mn   color   stereo   2005   Canada
by Emmanuel Avenel & Marie-France Giraudon

A circumpolar navigation between reality and illusion, the lived and the imaginary, becomes a strange odyssey in the wonderful world of mirages, in search of something beyond boundaries, horizons, infinity. This mythic journey reorients satellite imagery, radar telemetry and cartography into geographical incoherence and disruptions of the machinery. Here the perception of reality gives way to pure illusion.

Conductor
2mn   b/w   stereo   2004   Belgium
by Anouk de Clercq

A lightning conductor appears as a musical conductor for the cloud cover. At the core of an increasingly threatening blaze of fire and a whistling wind, a minuscule light has final call, until the violence of heaven discharges abruptly and the lightning conductor throws it all off-screen. This video was made in the framework of title safe II, as a project by walter verdin in which he invites artists to make a short video with 125bpm as a rhythmic rule.

Floodland
10mn44   color & b/w   stereo   2004   France
by Elie Barrau

This is the tale of an uncharted land which is never in the same place twice. Lost in the sea, Floodland is an emerging, shamelessly, decadent area, constantly adrift. Viral and animal, accidentally damaged by the flows, Floodland fells the need to dive, to emerge, to get away. Automatic growth, internal engines are working below the water level. So far or so close, we never see Floodland. Some people says they went there, some celebrities use to spend a few time under the channel and sometimes the fun starts 30,000 feet underneath the sea.

I like to think (right now, please!
8mn   color   stereo   2004   France
by delphine Hallis

Image for a instant a cybernetic ecology, where mammals and computers become inseparable, "live side by side in perfect harmony". This projection, which a part of a poem by Richard Brautigan, served as an impulsion to the film: the animal world encounters a virtual universe, into which it ends up melting into an indistinguishable, unique matter. Real images are deformed into futurist visions. Animal cries marry into electronic sounds. The poets voice accompanies us in this synthesised nature, produced by a waking dream in an electronic country.

La Nuit
17mn05   color   stereo   2004   Belgium
by Catherine Menoury

The Night - is it really that dark ? Or is the Night the victim of our inability to see through it? Are our nights restless, nightmarish because we are afraid of not seeing or is it fear that obscures our senses? To be in the Night and to see, to fear because we see, turning back, wavering, to reflect upon one's own existence, to leave or to keep going. Keep going because the circle is not complete. Unless the circle spirals and so can never lead to an end, but becomes and always grows. We are deaf and blind, we can see at night, we are clairvoyant. We are dead and we are alive. The Night - is it black, luminous or white ?

This film proposes an audio-visual translation of five poems by Omar Khayyâm. These quatrains (robâiyât) have the particularity of being short, spontaneous and direct. This form therefore encouraged me to search for the spontaneity and pertinence in the editing, to develop an apt rhythmic research in order to underline as much the sense as the musicality of these poetic proverbs.

A feverish reverie in which images glimpsed from a train window become lodged in a dream-like world of menace and beauty. This is the first in a planned series of works by Brook Hinton based on the concept of introjection - the uncounscious internalization of external phenomena. In psychology the term usually refers to the incorporation of external personalities or ideas (i.e., parental voices) into the personality : Hinton is more interested in the psychological impact of the things we encounter in passing.

"Try to understand" is a cover version of "the trap", a song by Kat Onoma, which was mixed with Jack Spicer's voice reading out "Billy the Kid" in a San Francisco bookshop in 1959. This video is an attempt at re-viving the links between the text, the voice, the music and the revival of the text by Burger, as if we were going back and forth between the source of the evocation (a fading memory, a small river, the narrator and the kid, is it a trap ?) and the numerous images it generates. Repetitions, disclosures, erasures, the memory of a time internal to nature.

"Yvonne, Marie, Madeleine... 89 ans, orpheline de guerre" is only explicit in its title : the video is sonorous, speaking, but saying nothing. Somebody ready to leave is on a quest : she searches, seems to move away from herself, to finally let it go and, continue. She is given to us to see, we get closer to her, that which was our due: the body, the voice, memory which escapes us. We regard the outside to lean towards the interior.
